Organizing the Holiday Decorations

When you have kids, one thing becomes clear; holidays are much bigger now than before kids.

As they grow, kids tend to get more and more into the holidays, especially with school holiday parties and family events.

My garage slowly became overtaken by Christmas lights/ornaments, Easter baskets, and Halloween decor. I finally told myself, its time to go through it all.

As daunting as this task seemed at first, it became quite therapeutic after a while. Going through old Halloween costumes brought back some fond memories. Sifting through all the old ornaments really made me consider which ones we wanted to use each year and which ones we should give away. The previous years' Easter baskets all represented a stage my son was in and a character or vehicle he was into.

It was like I was sorting through memories and choosing which to treasure and keep for the years to come.

Getting rid of the excess holiday decorations we no longer used felt productive and saved more space for the items we actually wanted.

I was able to successfully condense our holiday decorations down to three bins. One bin for Christmas, one for Halloween, and one for Easter/Valentine's Day.

The Halloween bin contains some dog costumes, Sylas' past years' trick-or-treating buckets, a pumpkin garland, Halloween lights, and a few other yard decorations.

The Christmas bin is currently holding all of our Christmas tree decorations; i.e. ornaments, the star, and string lights. The bin also contains our family stockings, holiday throw pillows, fancy holiday candlesticks, a mini Christmas tree for Sylas, and our reusable Advent calendar.

The Easter/Valentines bin contains previous years' Easter baskets, Valentine boxes, bunny ears headband, heart light-up headband, heart garland, and our resurrection eggs.

I am holding onto at least a few of the Halloween trick-or-treating buckets and a few of previous years' Easter baskets so that Sylas can switch them out/reuse them each year and we won't keep buying more.

I was able to successfully part with a majority of our overgrown collection of holiday decorations. I am happy with the result because now we have a manageable amount and it has opened up so much space in our garage. As we acquire more holiday keepsakes and decorations down the road, I am hoping to continue going through the items more frequently.

There are so many fun holiday memories ahead! I cannot wait to see how our bin contents change over the next few years!

I hope your garage is cleaner than mine was! Have a great day!
